James M. Hurley Appointed Vice President for Finance and Treasurer

Message from Mike Howard, Executive Vice President

Dear members of the Tufts University community,

I am pleased to announce that James M. Hurley has been appointed vice president for finance and treasurer, effective April 6, 2020.

Jim joined Tufts University in 2016 as executive university budget director where he led the university’s budget and financial planning. He also served as executive administrative dean of Arts & Sciences ad interim from December 2017 through June 2018. Given Jim’s extensive experience working with the schools and university leadership on financial matters, upon the retirement of Tom McGurty, Jim was appointed vice president for finance and treasurer ad interim on January 1, 2020.

In addition to Jim’s outstanding financial leadership at Tufts, he has extensive financial experience in higher education. Prior to joining Tufts, Jim served as vice president for budget and planning at Northwestern University for ten years. While at Northwestern, he managed the university’s annual planning and budget process, developed long-range financial plans, assisted in expanding support for its medical school through new agreements with the university’s clinical partners, and led the development of a new campus in the Middle East. Jim’s financial leadership positions also include serving as vice president for budget and planning at Brandeis University and associate dean for administration and finance at New York University for eleven years.

Jim’s deep understanding of Tufts’ financial systems, budget management process, and experience in university leadership, as well as his extensive prior financial experience in higher education, position him to lead financial operations at Tufts as we continue to strengthen the university in a context of change across American higher education.

I am very grateful to the search committee for its thoughtful assessment of Tufts’ needs and careful evaluation of many qualified candidates.

Sincerely,

Michael W. Howard, Executive Vice President
