We are writing to update you on the university’s plans for Tufts Support Services (TSS) and provide details about the timeline, scope of services and staffing for this new center.
When it launches in mid-December 2014, TSS will support many human resources (HR) and finance-related administrative services such as benefits enrollment, travel arrangements and accounts payable activities that are currently handled by many different groups across Tufts. TSS will organize resources into a specialized center that will deliver consistent, high-quality client service to Tufts faculty, staff, student-employees and prospective employees on commonly requested tasks. TSS will be comprised of three groups, each of which will focus on a unique set of responsibilities in HR and finance. Each of these groups will be led by a director and will employ staff in a variety of roles. Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 9, the university will post 40 full-time positions and seven temporary positions in TSS on the Work@Tufts website. All these positions will be open to internal applicants; some will also be posted externally. The primary goal in staffing TSS will be to retain as many knowledgeable and qualified Tufts employees as possible to ensure that TSS personnel are highly skilled and well versed in university culture, policies and procedures.
TSS will be an operating division of the Office of the Executive Vice President and will be led by Senior Director of TSS, Dick Doolin. Dick has worked at Tufts for more than 32 years in a number of finance positions, most recently as the director of financial services. His experience at the university covers a broad range of activities that will be supported by TSS.

The TSS model builds on Tufts’ tradition of managing resources carefully to maintain our financial strength and responds to feedback received through our Excellence at Work survey, in which many employees told us that we should reduce red tape and streamline administrative processes. TSS reflects these recommendations and strives to coordinate administrative work at Tufts so it can be most effectively accomplished, while reducing duplicative, complicated and sometimes outdated processes and technology.
The TSS project update and answers to common questions posted on the TEAM website provide more detail on the TSS organization, how it will affect existing positions at the university and what it means to schools and divisions going forward.
TSS is one of many projects within the Tufts Effectiveness in Administrative Management (TEAM) Program, a university-wide initiative designed to ensure that our administration supports Tufts’ core academic mission while also serving as a responsible steward of our resources. We believe that TSS and other TEAM projects will enable all Tufts faculty and staff to focus more time and resources on work that advance our teaching, research and impact on society.
