Tufts Reduces Energy-Related Emissions
Dear Tufts University community members,
We are pleased to share that Tufts will immediately reduce energy-related emissions on the Boston health sciences campus by 40% as a result of Tufts' participation in an aggregated renewable energy purchase.
This is a major milestone on the university's path to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and also helps the City of Boston make substantial progress toward its carbon reduction goals.
Tufts is a member of the Consortium for Climate Solutions, a first-of-its-kind group of higher education institutions, healthcare systems, nonprofit organizations, and a municipality in Cambridge and Boston, leveraging collective purchasing power to invest in renewable energy. Using a procurement model known as a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA), Tufts supported the creation of 20,000 megawatt hours of new solar energy – enough to power 1,800 homes a year.
The VPPA brings us closer to decarbonization by reducing our largest carbon emissions contributor: powering our buildings.
Tufts' participation in this initiative aligns with our legacy of climate leadership and puts our community's shared commitment to a more sustainable future into practice.
