VP for Finance and Treasurer Jim Hurley to Retire June 30
Dear Tufts community members,
I am writing to share the news that Jim Hurley, vice president for finance and treasurer has announced his retirement effective June 30, 2025. For nearly a decade, Jim has served in several financial leadership roles at the university, most recently as vice president and treasurer since April 2020.
Jim came to Tufts in 2016 from Northwestern University where he served as vice president of budget and planning. Jim joined Tufts as the executive university budget director, leading budget planning across all schools and divisions at the university. In addition to his university budget responsibilities, from fall 2017 through June 2018, Jim served as executive administrative dean of the School of Arts and Sciences ad interim responsible for strategic planning, assessment, financial management, and other administrative functions. In 2020, Jim was promoted to vice president for finance and treasurer. Under Jim’s leadership, Tufts achieved and maintains Aa3 and AA- ratings from Moody's and Standard & Poor's, respectively, enabling the university to borrow $250 million to finance new and improved facilities. Most recently, Jim led the financial planning and financing for the new Boston Avenue student residence facility.
Beyond Jim's many professional accomplishments, his leadership and spirit of collaboration across the finance division—and the university as a whole—have been exemplary. His strong work ethic, meaningful contributions, and unwavering commitment to the university’s mission and values have earned him deep respect and appreciation from colleagues across the university.
Please join me in expressing our appreciation to Jim for his decade of dedicated service and significant contributions to the university and in wishing him all the best in his next chapter.
Best regards,
Michael W. Howard
Executive Vice President
