William Murphy Named Vice President for Human Resources

Message from Michael W. Howard, Executive Vice President

I am pleased to announce the appointment of William (Bill) Murphy as the university's next vice president for human resources, effective October 7, 2024.

With more than twenty years of higher education experience, Bill comes to Tufts from Boston College serving as associate vice president of human resources. Prior to Boston College, Bill was the director of labor relations at Harvard University and senior director of labor relations at Northeastern University. Bill holds a Bachelor of Arts from Boston College and Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School.

Bill has extensive experience as a human resources executive with demonstrated success leading teams and developing and implementing strategic programs with university leadership and key stakeholders. Bill's expertise spans all aspects of human resources, including employee relations, policy design and administration, labor relations, legal compliance, benefits design, wellness programming, compensation, and training and leadership development.

Bill was selected following a national search that yielded a pool of very strong candidates. After a thorough interview process by the search committee and many university leaders, it was clear that Bill's accomplished record of achievement and impressive career experiences would position him to assume this critically important role.

I am extremely grateful to the search committee for its thoughtful assessment and careful evaluation of the many qualified candidates.

Best regards,

Michael W. Howard
Executive Vice President
